Kate Hoi-Yee Yu (楊凱儀)

Born in Hong Kong

Lives and studies in London, UK

Hoi-Yee Yu is currently a postgraduate student at the Camberwell College of Arts of the University of the Arts London, specialising in painting. After being taught to conform with the classical genres of still life and portraiture in Hong Kong, she has evolved to use them to question our aesthetic values and identities. Her artworks go beyond captivating the eyes, engaging deeply with the complexities of identity politics. Through her creative practice, Yu seeks not only to explore these urgent issues but also to inspire discussion and action.

Graduating with First-Class honours in BA Fine Art from the University of Reading, UK, where Hoi-Yee began to examine traditional painting’s potential for exploring questions of intersecting identities. Her art dissertation examined how Chinese-American painter Martin Wong (1946-1999)’s work explores intersections of race with gender and sexuality in his portrayals of individual identities and critiques of larger societal structures. This study has inspired Yu to delve into advocating for awareness of intersectional oppression.
